Looking for a big university with football, school spirit, and merit scholarships? These 11 public colleges offer opportunities to reduce tuition costs, including awards based on GPA and test scores.
Updated for the 2027–28 academic year
Over the years, I’ve helped many families navigate the college financial aid process, including understanding whether they qualify for need-based financial aid and what that might mean for their college budget.
For families who don’t qualify for significant need-based aid, I often encourage them to look at colleges offering generous merit scholarships. These awards can make a substantial difference in what a family ultimately pays for college.
Admittedly, I tend to focus quite a bit on private colleges because many have substantial institutional scholarship budgets. But I don’t want families to overlook some excellent opportunities at public universities.
And here’s where things get interesting.
Some of the big, spirited public universities that students are excited about also offer substantial merit scholarships—sometimes based on a published combination of GPA and SAT or ACT scores.
We’re talking about schools with major athletics, active campus communities, and the kind of college experience many high school students picture when they imagine going away to college.
Even better, some universities publish scholarship charts that allow families to estimate what a student might qualify for before applying.
Not every award is guaranteed, and scholarship policies vary by school. But these universities are absolutely worth exploring when you’re building a financially balanced college list.
11 Public Universities With Merit Scholarship Opportunities
The universities below offer automatic scholarship consideration, published academic merit awards, or other significant merit opportunities for qualifying students.
Important: Scholarship amounts, eligibility criteria, application requirements, and deadlines can change from year to year. The information below reflects the scholarship details researched for the 2027–28 planning cycle. Always confirm the requirements for your student’s actual entry year using the official university scholarship pages linked below.
1. University of Alabama
The University of Alabama is one of the first schools I think of when discussing automatic merit scholarships at large public universities.
Alabama publishes an automatic scholarship grid for out-of-state and international freshmen based on GPA and SAT or ACT scores.
Annual awards range from $6,000 to full tuition plus additional benefits for students who meet the highest academic criteria.
No separate application is required for automatic merit scholarships, but students must meet the university’s application and official test-score deadlines.
Why it’s worth a look: Families can review the posted scholarship grid and get a clearer idea of potential merit eligibility before applying.
2. Auburn University
Another Alabama university worth considering is Auburn.
Auburn offers academic merit scholarships to qualifying Alabama residents and out-of-state students, with award opportunities ranging from approximately $5,000 to full tuition and mandatory fees, depending on the scholarship.
Academic performance, test scores, residency, and the specific award all matter.
Many scholarships are considered through the admission process without an additional scholarship application. Families should pay close attention to Auburn’s priority deadlines and the requirements for individual awards.
Scholarships may be renewable for up to four years, provided students continue to meet eligibility requirements.
3. Colorado State University
Colorado State University in Fort Collins offers merit scholarship opportunities for both Colorado residents and nonresident students.
Its Green and Gold Scholarships for qualifying nonresidents have published award levels ranging from approximately $4,000 to $16,000 annually, with renewal opportunities for up to four years.
One feature I particularly like is that these scholarships do not require SAT or ACT scores.
Students are considered through the admission process, provided they meet the applicable eligibility requirements and deadlines.
Worth knowing: A strong academic record can create scholarship opportunities even when a student chooses not to submit test scores.
4. University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky offers several merit scholarship opportunities for resident and nonresident freshmen.
These include academic scholarships and more competitive selective scholarships.
Published academic scholarship amounts range from approximately $1,500 to $6,500 annually, while certain highly competitive awards can cover substantially more, potentially up to the full cost of attendance.
Some academic scholarships do not require an additional application, but selective awards may have additional criteria and requirements.
The university also cautions that scholarship funding can be limited, making early applications especially important.
Many awards are renewable for up to four years if students meet the applicable requirements. Continued…
My goal is to help families replace uncertainty with confidence so they can make informed decisions about college admissions and financial aid.
